What equipment do you need for downhill/alpine skiing? I have recently gotten into downhill/alpine skiing. I am wondering what equipment should you have to ski comfortably, and also, if you have any, tips for skiing and getting better at it. Any websites with any of this would be helpful as well. When is it considered too late to get in to competitive alpine skiing? I'm referring to age of course. I'm 25 and have skied a fair amount in my life. Is it too late in life to try for competitive alpine skiing with the hope of making it to the more prestigious competitions? Well, I suppose if I'm motivated enough I can do anything right? How come so many skiers fell in the alpine skiing event? And the speed skaters too? Yesterday a lot of the women fell in the alpine skiing event. I saw one got injured so badly she had to be rescued by helicopter. Also in the short track speed skating event there were two consecutive races where someone fell due to a bump in the ice, first a Chinese woman and then two Canadians in the final 500m event. I know the weather's unpredictable, and that the Alpine course is supposed to be made safer today, but is it going to be enough? And shouldn't the ice rink been smoothed out by now? Maybe I'm overreacting. I just think it should be safe for the athletes.

The bindings are not demo bindings (Salomon 850) and are mounted the normal way, by drilling. My current boots are 313mm in length (from heel to toe) and I was wondering if the bindings will only work with boots that are within a millimeter of the ones they were mounted for, or if there's about a centimeter or so of adjustment possible.

Is it ok to do downhill skiing in "randonee" or "alpine touring" skis with downhill boots and bindings? I have pretty new alpine downhill boots and some old downhill bindings. I've got a great deal on some alpine touring / randonee skis, some people even use them for telemark. I plan to get them in the same size as the downhill skis that I'm replacing. Is there anything that will be different or any problems I would have if I switch my boots and bindings to these skis? I should clarify that I would be buying bare randonee/AT skis and moving my downhill bindings and boots to them. I won't be doing any telemarking or randonee, just downhill skiing off of lifts, mostly all on-piste. So would it be OK to put alpine downhill bindings on a randonee/AT ski and use it as a pure full-time downhill ski?

Teaching kid to recover from a fall in Alpine Ski? My kids (6 and 10) can pretty much ski from top to bottom of a long easy ski slope doing snowplow including making turns. However, they still struggle a lot with the basic technique of getting up after a fall and I am struggling to teach this technique and end up picking them up most of time. We're OK up to getting in the right position with the skiis parallel and towards the bottom of the hill. It's the final step of getting up the kids struggle with. They can't lift their weight with poles, and I know with the center of weight in the right spot it's possible to get up even without poles. I can do this myself but can't figure out how to explain to them. I would appreciate tips.

Which is more dangerous, cheerleading or skiing? I'm an alpine ski racer and one of my friends knows a cheerleader that is pretty convinced that cheerleading is the most dangerous sport in the world. i know that every now and then they fall and can get an injury from that but have you ever seen someone in the olympics for ski racing fall in the middle of their race? even the smallest mistake could be fatal! one of the girls i race with actually died this season from going out of control and hitting a tree! please tell me i'm not the only one that thinks ski racing is more dangerous than cheerleading!

How to get in shape in two months for a ski-alpine race (walking up in extreme pace/altitude, skiing down) Txs The race is in mid January. I am reasonably fit need but I need an upgrade. Problem is I can’t run/jog and I would need an everyday workout plan to maintain my fitness and improve it to a higher level. I know I won’t be in topnotch shape but I’d need to “survive” it. I used to run/bike, but I injured my Achilles 4 months ago and I haven’t done anything ever since. I do need to lose some weight; I'm 6' 0' and 165 pound, and I’d like to go back to my race 155. I used to do 50 km on my x-country skis or ran a half marathon under 1:25. Any thoughts? Thanks a bunch

my alpine ski boots push on my ankle bone and really hurt. is an exacto knife too extreme of a solution? They push right on the bone, and the removable liner is very springy and soft, so punching the foam in doesn't work. i want to just cut a hole for the ankle bone to stick out into... think this is too extreme??
