Downhill Skiing Ski Areas Knowledge Base

What are best smaller downhill ski areas with gentle slopes in New England? Our kids are beginner downhill skiers and need lots of gentle slopes with nice long runs in New England, preferably Vermont or New Hampshire, or even Massachusetts, but not large resorts, as we're not crazy about the big crowds.
Where is the best downhill skiing in Australia? I'm looking into going on a student exchange next year, but I want to go somewhere that I can ski. Australia is one of the options I was looking at, but what is skiing like in Australia? Are the mountains any good, or are they more like hills? Is there a large number of places to ski packed into one area? How long does ski season usually last? Also, if you know any of this information for New Zealand, that would be helpful too. Thanks!
Where would you say is the best skiing area in Austria? I want the best spot for downhill as well as 'Apres Ski', too...
Dog sledding and Skiing? I was wondering if anyone knows of some areas in the United States that offer dog sledding, downhill skiing, cross-country skiing, etc? We are very interested in dog sledding, but would like the other two options with it too.
Physics - Downhill speed skiing terminal speed? In downhill speed skiing a skier is retarded by both the air drag force on the body and the kinetic frictional force on the skis. Suppose the slope angle is θ = 37.0°, the snow is dry snow with a coefficient of kinetic friction μk = 0.0400, the mass of the skier and equipment is m = 73 kg, the cross-sectional area of the (tucked) skier is A = 1.30 m2, the drag coefficient is C = 0.150, and the air density is 1.20 kg/m3. (a) What is the terminal speed? (b) If a skier can vary C by a slight amount dC by adjusting, say, the hand positions, what is the corresponding variation in the terminal speed? (dvt/dC)
How can I estimate the force of resistance when I am snow skiing? If I am going downhill on skis with no wind, can I estimate the force of my air resistance based on my surface area? The purpose of this is so I can find the frictional force so I can calculate coefficient of friction. I know I could look up the coefficient of friction and find the friction force, but that's not what I'm trying to do. I can find the force going down the hill with no resistance. If I can estimate air resistance, I can find the resistance force due to friction.
I'm looking for good downhill mountainbike areas in the northeastern US, any help? I'm looking for a place, preferably a ski resort somewhere in the northeast, where I can rent a bike and do some downhill biking. Somewhere in the area from new york state to maine. I've heard of killington, but I've also heard that isn't that great of a spot. Anywhere else you would suggest? If not, at least maybe a spot to rent a bike and just do some good east coast cross country riding? (off road preferably).
What type and brand of skis should I get? I am returning to skiiing after a long break and find myself baffled by the different types and styles of skiis, Alpine,Telemark, Twin-Tip, waxed, waxless, etc . I used to be an avid skier until about 15 years ago. Not too many ski slopes in Dallas, sigh.... Anyhow, I live in the Seattle area and will mostly be skiing at Crystal mountain with occasional trips east of the mountains to Mission Ridge, Mt Spokane. Not a lot of powder, but do get a lot so slush and ice and corn snow. I used to be a fairly proficient skier with no problems on the black diamond slopes. I prefer skiing downhill, and hitting the moguls. A friend recommended the Salmon X Scream skis, but frankly he's not much of a skier. I was also wondering about length, I'm about 5' 11' and used to ski on 190cm skiis. I'm not sure I will be skiing as much as I used to, so I don't want to get a top of the line setup yet. Can anyone recommend a good ski/bindings/boot combination? Thanks a lot for any advice!!
What are the best ski resorts in the Lake Tahoe area? A friend and I are going to 4 resorts over Spring Break but not sure where exactly yet. I snowboard, he skis. Hoping to hit the best places out there. We are more into freestyle stuff than downhill, but thats because we don't have downhill skiing that is lengthy enough in the Midwest. So just the best of the best is what we hope to visit. Thanks for the help. Thank you for helping. I have seen all the facts like that before, i know the stats. I'm just very curious to know anyones opinions from experience, or even places out there i should avoid. Thanks!! Heavenly was definetly a for sure for us. By challenging terrain do you mean like park or downhill type terrain? I've heard a lot about Boreal's park.. Is that worth going to? Is Homewood the same, crowd wise as Alpine Meadows?
What type of seasonal activity is your most favorite? Spring/Summer Hiking, photography, parasailing, fishing, wildlife viewing, four by fouring, camping, enjoying the scenery and outdoors, kayaking, canoeing, roller skating, rock climbing, mountain biking, atving, exploring remote areas, sailing, jet-skiing, swimming, inner tubing, white water rafting, wide games, picnicking, etc. Fall/ Winter Ice hockey, basketball, volleyball, badminton, football, snowmobiling, heli-skiing, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, downhill skiing, ice climbing, looking at snow, winter driving, other extreme sports, winter camping, toboganning, sledding, etc. Why do you like this, and what would you recommend while doing this activity?
What is Downhill Area Passes for Mt Seymour? I'm planning to go snowboarding/skiing on My Seymour but I can't find the lift pass price, but I found "Downhill Area Passes" what is that?
Best Resort In Lake Tahoe?! We are planning a snowboarding trip to Lake Tahoe- not really sure which resort to stay at? We are Young (20s-30s), but the social scene is not that important... its about the boarding! Can I get a little comparison of Some (All) of these resorts?! Whatever you can tell me about any of them would be awesome! Thanks!! Alpine Meadows Boreal Ski Area Diamond Peak Donner Ski Ranch Granlibakken Ski Resort Heavenly Ski Resort Homewood Mountain Resort Kirkwood Mt. Rose Ski Area Northstar-at-Tahoe Sierra-at-Tahoe Soda Springs Squaw Valley USA Sugar Bowl Ski Resort Tahoe Donner Downhill Ok.. I think we would like a little night life. Nothing to extreme, a local pub, good resturaunts would be great. I am NOT an excellent snowboarder, however my brother and his friend is and we would like terrain parks/ half pipes, etc. North/South? I'm not sure! I have been leaning towards Squaw Valley, so far it has everything I am looking for, I think?? I have been to small resorts and big resorts, I think i prefer the bigger ones... with more people (but dont want to wait in line too terribly long!) Also, we would like to stay in a ski in/ski out condo/hotel. Thanks for any info you have!!! Oh And! we will be traveling in early February..
whats the best place to get inexpensive quality skis in the lehigh valley area for younger females? im looking for downhill/ra alpine skis at an intermediate level... preferably less expensive but still good quality.
What could this dream mean? I was in a shopping mall, and was asked if I liked to go skiing. Naturally, I said, "Yes." So later, I found myself out with skis strapped to my feet, but this wasn't the kind of skiing I normally did. We were on a frozen lake; it was dark; there was a blizzard. I couldn't see anything, and my footing wasn't proper, because I only knew downhill skiing. I still thought I'd give it a shot. Then, it happened. I was tumbling. Down. What was happening? Down. I hit something hard. Solid. But it was an edge, so my body tipped over the corner and went again. Down. Down. Down. Solid. Whatever I hit was extremely hard, and I blacked out. From there it was a blur. I woke up in the hospital with my two other skiing partners in the same state. What had happened to us? The last I remembered was falling. There were cords, and wires, and IVs hooked up to us; my body felt numb. What had happened? I couldn't remember. Then, a group of people came-some I recognized, others I didn't. I was informed I had a concussion, and that I am extremely beat up from the fall. It was lucky I was still alive. After I had enough healing time and personal comfort, we went out on the lake to investigate what happened. We saw it, where I fell- it was concrete wall. There was a ledge, which was the first thing I hit. And then the solid concrete patio below. There was a latter on the side, to enter the patio from above, so we crawled down to investigate. There was a snow-covered car, and a sliding door. The whole area was enclosed by concrete. We took some measurements of the snow depth from the blizzard, and determined some facts about the fall- it was a very factual approach. It's alarming to me, because I don't normally remember my dreams... but this one was exeptionally vivid. Then, I woke up.
What is the best length all mountain ski for me? I want to get in to more off piste and ski touring and looking to buy a set up with touring bindings, probably freeride bindings to get in to the more remote areas but not always long distance touring routes. I currently use a 170cm atomic c19 beta carve which is superb on piste and ok off piste. I was looking at a pair off Scott Missions or Dynastar 8000 fitted with free ride bindings ( still going to use my downhill boots though at the moment). Im 5'11" and weigh in at between 11.5 to 12 stone max throughout the year. So what length and any thoughts on a ski/binding package for my needs? Thanks in advance all. Mark
What country in Europe should I move to? I'm in American citizen in possession of a European citizenship (shall not name country). I love to downhill (bicycling in the mountains), kayaking, but I also like a video game here and there. I'm going to be taking with me, about 80,000 USD when I move, so I have time to find myself a job. I may or may not go to college, depending on how I feel about life. I want to enjoy time during the week after work and on the weekends (good weather), and I don't mind it being more chilly than warm. Skiing is also a great love of mine (downhilling is barely above!!). Preferrably would like to live in or near areas where my specified sports are possible. Thanks!!
Bleeding after Activity? A few years ago, I submitted a question regarding the odd tendencies of my body after rigorous physical activity. To this date, I have received little more answer than "sounds interesting" or something similar. The problem goes like this; I'm on a track team, I'm an avid freelance downhill and mountain biker, I enjoy swimming, kayaking, hiking, and other outdoor activities. After I participate in these activities (and even more frequently in cold weather), on occasion, I begin to get the iron-taste of blood in my mouth. My throat begins itching, and both my throat and lungs begin to ache. I stay out-of-breath for longer periods of time after activity and, should I spit at any point during this, my saliva is usually tinted pinkish red (I assume from the blood). I have approached numerous doctors in areas of expertise ranging from pediatrics to emergency care to sleep medicine, and I've received little to no help from any of them. Though I'm in college now, I still go by the only advice that makes sense, from my high school track coach, to stop moving, stay upright, and do whatever it seems helps make the taste of and the blood itself go away. However, this does little to solve the problem itself. Living on the northern edge of Michigan's Upper peninsula this year means I'll have an even harder winter than I'm used to, and I'm worried about skiing and practicing outdoors. If any doctors can lend a hand here, or if there are any other people who have had similar experiences, please let me know of any causes to avoid or any solutions to use. Please Help!
Winter holiday suggestions - Canada? I'm looking for a nice place to go for a winter holiday in Canada, and would prefer it not to be a big downhill skiiing resort. I'd like to be able to go walking, snowshoeing, sledging and cross country skiing; if there's snowbiking, dog sleds or snowmobiling too, that's even better. Can anyone suggest a good area to head for, or even better, a nice hotel to stay in, with a bit of character and good food?
What do you think of my story so far? Read it all! "Get you body at a 150 degree angle, and your legs at a 160 degree angle!" Coach yells from the side lines. I push on my lean but wipe out. I pound on the ground with fury. I go for another run downhill, from where I left off. "Close the gap between your legs!" He yells again. As I push on my lean, I also try to keep my legs together. Instead of picking up speed it slowly eases down. I go back to my original position without stopping, and feel the speed picking up again. I know that coaches tips will help my go further and faster, but I can't seem to get the right position. You see in this sport it's either do it right, or don't do it at all. Once I'm at a conformal position, I try again. It only makes it worst. My ski hits the gate and I fall to the ground. "What the hell is wrong with me today!" I think to myself. "It's ok, your under alot of pressure right now." Ryan says. I turn to face him, and reach for my lucky necklace that my mom gave to me when I won my first competition, I've worn it ever since. My hand touches my skin, and I realize that it's not there. I automatically fall to my knees and start searching for it on the ground. "Are you... ok?" Paige asks. "My necklace, I need to find my necklace!" I scream with a bit of anger and fear mixed together. Paige tells coach how much the necklace means to me, and I begin walking away from them. "Kim, the race starts in 20 minutes get over here!" "Not without my necklace!" "Fine, you have ten minutes, but if your not back, good luck finding a new coach!" I think about staying, but he's probably bluffing about the whole new coach thing, so I just pick up my paste to a light jog. I enter the building and try retracing my steps, but my mind is filled with the worst case scenario. I know I may sound like I'm over reacting, but my gut says otherwise. I unzipper my bag, and start pulling out everything, I finally reach the bottom, nothing. I check my pockets, but it seems to be no where. Since everyone is outside by this time, the locker room is empty. I search around the ground, and finally give up. I decide to take another look out in the halls, and end up wondering around in the figure skating area. I begin hearing footsteps behind me As I begin to turn around I say, "Paige, just hold on a bit i'll be don...." I stop when I notice that no one is following me. I continue to move forward, but stop again when I feel as if someones breathing onto my neck. I take a glance back, but see nothing. "It's my mind playing tricks on me." I say in my head. I stop at a corner where bags are scattered around, and carefully look in between them. My heart stops for a minor second when I get another feeling that someone is there. I'm scared to look back but I do anyway. When I do, someone pushes me, my head bangs against the wall, and I feel dizzy for a moment. He whispers into my ear, while getting a firm grip on me. "I warned you." I feel as if I am about to vomit, but I know I have to fight back. I punch him as hard as I can, and his grip losses on me but it remains firm. I try again. This time he blocks it with his free hand. He knocks me down onto the ground, and grabs one of the skates he finds in the bag besides him. He presses it to my throat, and chuckles lightly. I know I can't back down, so I try kicking at him this time. It only makes it worst, he lightly slices my right check, and I see the red thick blood flow down onto my neck. Before I have a chance to scream he covers my mouth. Tears begin forming in my eyes, my body seems to run out of energy.... Please don't comment on the grammar, more on the plot of the story!

(dvt/dC) Answers are: a) Vt = √[2mg(sinΘ - µcosΘ)/(CAρ)] = 59 m/s b) Since Vt = k*C^(-½), dVt/dC = -½kC^(-3/2) **************************************************** BUT WHAT IS K? in the b) solution?
physics question please help? In downhill speed skiing a skier is retarded by both the air drag force on the body and the kinetic frictional force on the skis.
